The Bridge

We have incorporated bridges into a number of our projects now. We find that there is something alluring about them. They are landmark on a path where something precious, dangerous or inaccessible is happening below and in that sense we are always drawn to them to discover and find out why. Once there, bridges allow us to defy gravity – looking over the edge to the drop below – and think, with exhilaration where we would be without the complex and sometimes illegible engineering keeping us aloft.
Bridges are a place of transition from one world to another. When approaching a bridge, it creates in us a sense of anticipation for what is to come on the other side and becomes a place of consideration, where we can prime ourselves for the new environment that awaits us on the other side. This fact makes bridges a natural place for inward contemplation and reflection as well - how many movies have used them as a backdrop for these kinds of moments. How fitting too that they are a destination for moments of outward change like a wedding proposal or a reunion of friends.
These attributes make bridges a potent tool for eliciting thoughtfulness, joy and excitement from people and is the type of moment that we like to create in our architecture and landscapes when given the chance.
